Broken images + strange code after activation! What to do?

Hello!
I came across this plugin via a recommendation from a Facebook group “WordPress Speed Up”. So I installed it earlier this week and activated it. But the first test run caused too many broken image links one the page (images simply not loading, page displayed the ALT text instead – see https://ibb.co/jwQZTLV).

Now, over the weekend, I found a little more time to spend with the technical side of my website. I finally re-activated Lazy Images, the one feature I had to remove previously because it broke my header. Now I adjusted my child theme, so this seems to work just fine. Afterwards I revisited the settings of YOUR plugin, changed a couple of things, and re-activated it. But I still get errors!

Problems, which still persist:
1. Now, with lazy image loading enabled, the top images load later than you need to read the text around them. One basically has scrolled past their location before they load.
2. Some (but now only SOME) images never load on photo heavy posts! As a travel blog my site has quite a few of these.
3. In some cases (as an example please open the link at the bottom) there’s a long line of html code in the middle of the page! I never had an issue like this before I activated WebP Express. This happened earlier in the week too (see bottom right mobile capture in the first image, link further up), and it happens again now! I cleared my cache – the problem persists! I then opened the source code of the page and found this

I think I have also narrowed down the problem – but I have no resolution! The new HTML seems to stumble if/when I have a photo credit link at the end of the image caption. This seems to explain what is happening, but not the why!

The plugin for the galleries is called “Tiled Galleries Carousel Without Jetpack”. And no, I cannot remove this plugin, I use these galleries on nearly 50% of all posts (that makes it 100+ posts).

Please help! I don’t want to give up on your otherwise great plugin…
