• Nothing works right with BuddyPress when it comes to media. It is nothing but painful to try and build professional looking sites using BP.
When I posted a similar question in the BP forums, one of the authors did nothing but argue with me, then he deleted my last reply and closed the thread. Yup, very professional.

I am wondering if there are any alternatives which properly do media.
I need users to be able to upload ANY media into their activity strea, into their albums, etc.
I need users to be able to comment and share and other normal things when it comes to social networking. All of these things were a given when we were a Joomla house but now having moved to WP, we need a solution.

To top it all off, BP forces you to purchase their ffmpeg tool even though I already build all of my servers with proper ffmpeg and other conversion and compression tools. Their tool deletes or replaces mine with their limited file type solution. Hard to want to buy that tool when mine do so much more. I’m basically dumbing down my servers to accommodate BP.

My question is… is there one of three things out there.

A theme/package which works on TOP of BP so that I can eliminate that evil BP-media and get proper previews of ANY media uploaded.

Perhaps a plugin or set of plugins that enhance BP?

I’ve looked around for an alternative and have found a few things but I’m not interested in getting rid of all of BP, it’s a cool package, it’s only the bp-media part that impedes my sites on purpose so that they can sell their ffmpeg package.

PS: The price is fine and it would work for most people but the folks I am building sites for want more professional solutions and plugins from sometimes authors is not working out either.

    Help!!!

Why is there no edit option? I wanted to tone this message down a little. I’m simply frustrated after spending way too much time trying to find a solution to this problem and not being able to use my own ffmpeg tools.

I understand what you mean, Developing my site was terrible. I had to do in two languages it was hard, took time and I had to play with the buddypress core. So by the time it came to fix bp media I couldn’t event use there add on ffmpeg tool. Try there encoding, not working. I’m loosing my hair on this. Buddypress should come with media integration and I would be really happy to just have to deal with my server setup…

If you find a better solution to your issue please let me know.
    Best of luck

My only solution was to stop using wordpress for social media sites and use it for what it really is, a blog site. The stuff we were trying to build on WP we ended up going back to Joomla which has everything you need for A/V.
