I haven’t seen this kind of approach talked about, would really appreciate some input on my idea here.

I have a 10 year old WordPress website on one host, I’m looking to build a new site with the same name on a different host.

I’m thinking, just give the new site I’m building a temporary name and block it from being accessible until it’s done. Once done, manually change my new site’s config files and make it visible to being indexed, then change the DNS records at the registrar to go to the new site. No sandbox, no plugins, no local building.

To me this seems the most straight ahead approach, but am I missing something here as I have not seen the approach touched on in any video or article.

Thanks in in advance for any opinions on this.

That’s what I’d do, start building the site under the temp domain on the new hosting provider.

When you’re ready, switch the URLs at Settings > General in your Dashboard, attach the domain to the directory in your hosting account, and change the DNS.

Thanks for the response… it is weird that I’ve not see this mentioned anywhere. Ok, I feel better about this now.

One thing… when you say “attach the domain to the directory in your hosting account”, not quite sure what that means exactly? I’m using a Reseller program on this new host, so I have pretty good access to things. Once I change the name of the new site from its temp to its permanent name, won’t this be reflected in my hosting / Reseller / WHM area?

    Thanks again!

Possibly, but it’s hard to be sure. Many hosts operate differently from one another, so I advise checking their documentation or contacting their support.

OK, thanks again James. I think this will come later but to me this big sandbox question has been answered, and thank you for that.
