Building a Non-Blog Site with WP

Hello,

I am new to WordPress. I was told that WordPress is like other content management software (like Joomla and Drupal) that you can use to build a fully functional site. Are there any guides that is available to point me to that direction? Where do I start?

I have tried a couple of content management software, but they seem to be very heavy. I heard that WordPress is better, so I’d love to give it a try.
