• I’ve tried this twice and both times I have been unsuccessful. Both times I asked for assistance from my hosting company before proceeding so I thought I’d ask here before I tried it again.

What I want to do is build a site in WordPress first and then after it’s all done add my domain. For example…say I have an existing site that has https://www.URL.com already up and running and I’m just rebuilding that on WordPress but I don’t want to take that URL away from the old site until the WordPress site is ready….

Thanks in advance for your help!
    Christina

  • I changed my site from a bad looking html site to a nice looking WordPress site a while back.

I had WordPress installed in a sub-directory, I made all the changes and such (mostly moving content) then I “moved” WordPress to the root and renamed my index.html file so WordPress would pick-up and go with the index.php.

    or

I think the its own directory is the way to go – then the moving is just moving and editing two files I think along with changing a URL in the Dashboard. CAUTION – please read the moving part real well, many people just change the URL in the Dashboard and crash the site.

This way you don’t take the URL from the old site until you are ready, no fancy redirects, make sure you set the site to “block search engines” if you don’t want them stopping by before you have things updated. There are some privacy Plug-in’s that will stop visitors from even seeing the site if you want.
