Bulk optimization keeps stalling

Does it seem like it is getting stuck on a particular image?

I thought that was the case last night but this morning it is on another pic and the same thing is happening..

Also, midway through before it stalls completely it will say temporary failure several times that will flash on the screen for a few seconds and then it will resume until stalling….

Also I want to note that it won’t ever get past what ever the 1st pic is that is it optimizing.. it will keep trying and trying the whole time. I have 1353 pics to optimize right now and I think I have gotten 3-5 optimized last night constantly restarting it….

Sounds like it is timing out on the responses then, which seems likely given you are using lossy compression with 7 resizes, and only a 30 second max_execution_time.

So the first thing I would do is increase the max_execution_time with in your php settings (if you are allowed to).

If that doesn’t work, I recommend you switch over to the fast lossy compression on the EWWW Cloud settings tab.

I tried to find the php settings and all I got were directions to the style sheet. In the style sheet via search, I did not find max_execution. I have yet to try and find the php file via bluehost.. I will try that later today.. but,

then I checked the faster lossy optimization option and I it went through 9 pics then stalled again… but, it only shows now that I have 1352 images that need optimizing which is only 1 less than the previous number.

Bluehost should have a way to install a custom php.ini file. You most certainly won’t find max_execution_time in your stylesheet. I’ve gotten help from them in the past on setting that up.

All right, I increased the max execution to 60 seconds from 30 seconds in the php. I also checked the lossy optimization under the cloud settings.

it hasn’t stalled yet but for the last 15 minutes its been on the same pic with the temporary error coming up 5 times….

how long should it take to optimize a pic?

There is one other possibility, and that would be if your webhost is rate-limiting the ajax requests. Can you please send me an admin login via https://ewww.io/contact-us/ so I can take a look to see what sort of error we’re getting in the console?

admin to wordpress or bluehost

just to wordpress, shouldn’t be any need for the bluehost configs at this point

Ah, I see the problem now. You have a ton of rather large PNG files on your site that should be JPGs instead. The one it is stalling on right now is 741kb, and that is rather large in the world of PNG files. The fix would be to up the execution time rather high, 300+ ought to do it.

However, a quick check in the logs for squatting-2.png shows that it is only making it through the original image and a few resizes though before it gets cut off, so I think there is something else causing timeouts besides php. Watching the javascript console confirms this, as it returns the error response in about 40 seconds. Also, the raw response looks like this (which is not a standard apache/php error page as far as I know):

So, I there are two options here. First, you could convert a bunch of those images to JPG, but you’ll need to disable all PNG processing when you do those (and I would do them one by one). Anything that is photographic in nature, is going to be better as a JPG. EWWW can only search the wp_posts table to update urls, so take your time, and make sure you know where an image is found so you can check to see if it the url was updated properly.
The second would be to check with Bluehost to see how you can get rid of those timeouts, and just optimize the images “as is”.
