Has anyone figured out how to get bullet lists to work in WordPress?

I’ve spent the last two days trying to format a post based mostly on bullet lists. And no matter what I do it falls apart. My blog is 12 years old and I’ve written hundred of posts, mostly in prose form. Hence, I use bullet lists once in a blue moon.

This time I wrote a 3,000+ character post that’s mainly made of bullet lists. And, of course, some of those bullet lists have more than one paragraph under a bullet. Some even have sub-bullets under a bullet.

I wrote the post in Apple Pages (like I always do) and exported it as text. Then I placed the plain text in. WordPress (like I always do) and attempted to format it.

Well, I can’t get WordPress to add some padding under the first paragraph of a bullet and the paragraph below it. Why would I want to do that? Because the way it is now it just looks ugly. Furthermore, to the reader it just looks like one big blob of copy. I need some separation between my paragraphs.

When I try to create sub-bullets it changes the bullets above. Altogether it’s driving me crazy.

Please excuse me if I sound irritated, but after two days of pulling my hair out I’m almost ready to delete the article altogether and stick to prose.

Am I missing something here? Can this be solved with CSS?

I’ll appreciate whatever help you can send my way!

P.S. Just in case it makes a difference, I’m using the Classic Editor. Also, I didn’t link to the article because I haven’t yet published it.

To make things easier, I uploaded two “jpg” files to illustrate what I would like to achieve. File “01” shows my copy as it was created in my word processor. File “02” shows what it looks like in WordPress. You can see them here:

I am not sure whether you are using the nested ordered lists plugin as the functionality used when editing the lists is part of the WordPress editor, not the plugin.

Editing lists in WordPress can be frustrating when you have a specific layout in mind. Whenever making a new paragraph results inside a list item results a new list item being created, you should be able to use the editor’s code editing mode to edit the html directly to make <p> paragraph tags within a list item, or add line breaks using the <br/> tag.
