Bulletproof Security Conflict with 404 redirect

Do you have a standard single WordPress installation/website or is this a Network/Multisite site? The reason for asking is that I see other folks mentioning that the All 404 Redirect to Homepage plugin may not work fully correctly on a Network site.

It appears that the All 404 Redirect to Homepage plugin creates htaccess code so I am assuming the issue is that the htaccess code that this plugin creates needs to be added to BPS Custom Code or something like that so that both this plugin’s htaccess code and BPS htaccess code is combined. Will install and test the plugin and post back here after testing it.

The Animated Typewriter Effect plugin does not appear to do anything with htaccess code based on the help information that I could find about this plugin.

The issue/problem did not occur on my test site so maybe it has to do with the Custom Permalink Structure that you are using (or not using). Which Permalink setting are you using? On my test site I am using: Post name https://example.com/sample-post/

Also did you click the BPS AutoMagic buttons before activating BulletProof Modes?

htaccess Core htaccess Files Setup Steps:
1. Click the Create default.htaccess File button on the Security Modes page.
2. Click the Create secure.htaccess File button on the Security Modes page.
3. Select the Activate Root Folder BulletProof Mode Radio button and click the Activate|Deactivate button on the Security Modes page.
4. Select the Activate wp-admin Folder BulletProof Mode Radio button and click the Activate|Deactivate button on the Security Modes page.

Thanks for the quick reply. It’s a single site, not multi-site. My permalink structure is the same as your test site, postname.

Hmm, I’m pretty sure I never even got to click anything in BPS. As far as I remember, I activated the plugin and it broke the site links. I’ll try and replicate what I just said to confirm and report back here shortly.

Just activating the BPS plugin just activates BPS and does not do anything until you do the setup steps or actually save options and turn things on. So it is possible that BPS plugin code and another plugin you have installed have some sort of direct (direct meaning that the base plugin code itself has some sort of conflict) plugin code conflict. Try deactivating all of your plugins and then activating BPS. If that works then isolate which other plugin has the conflict by activating plugins one by one until you find it. Let me know what you find out.

Also check your php error log to see if there are any php errors that have clues about what is going on. And/or turn on WordPress Debugging for clues.

Ok, I get one error message during debug mode…

…and only found one post with a similar error message.

It looks like it’s from the font typed animation plugin (AKA Animated Typewriter Effect plugin), but when I deactivate this plugin, and then activate BPS, my site links still go screwy.

I’ll try deactivating all plugins and reactivating one at a time next and report back here soon.

I disabled every single plugin, activated BPS, and my site links still went screwy again. Perhaps it’s a theme issue. (Toolset Classfied) I really don’t know, but if it is, there’s nothing I can do because I can’t easily change the theme since the site is built around that classified functionality.

A “Strict Standards” php error is typically a very minor php error and would not be related to this issue.

Strict – PHP will suggest making changes to the code which will ensure the best interoperability and forward compatibility of the code.

Yep it is possible that the issue could be with the Toolset Classified theme or bundled plugins that come with the theme (if this theme has bundled plugins). There is one known issue with the JobRoller theme and BPS Pro since the way the JobRoller theme is designed is that it is supposed to be an “all in one” type of theme with bundled plugins that are intended to do everything needed. You could ask the Toolset Classified theme folks to test the BPS plugin to get a definite answer to that question. Or you could install the theme on another test site assuming licensing allows that since it is a premium theme. Or maybe quickly switch the theme to a WordPress theme temporarily. ie quickly switch to the WordPress 2015 theme, test and then switch back to your theme.

The only other logical possible thing that I can think (kind of a longshot and doubtful) is that something about how the host server is configured could be an issue. Very unlikely.

Yep, there are bundled plugins that come with that theme too, so that’s a good idea about reaching out to them. I can also mess around on my dev site with the default theme too.

It’s not a host issue as I have at least one other site on the same shared account that runs BPS without issue, so you were right about that being very unlikely. ??

Very off topic, but can’t find any other way to message another community member. Selym, I’ve read through a few of your posts and it looks like you’ve put quite a bit of effort into developing a wordpress install to cater to your family, including albums and genealogy. I’m gathering some data to take the same approach and wondered if you had documented your efforts anywhere or if you were willing to share your process.
