Hi, I have a question about using images created in other sites (i.e. Canva) and uploading them to Web Stories.

I’ve tried using the Web Stories plugin and, sorry, it’s really user unfriendly and not intuitive at all. I gave up trying to make pictures on there and went to Canva where I can create images and videos much more easily.

I’ve uploaded these (as images) to Web Stories and posted these, but I see in your FAQs that ‘burned-in’ text (i.e. text I added in Canva) won’t be understood by search engines and will impact SEO.

    Can you confirm:

1 – when you plan to improve the plugin so that people can use it more easily?
2 – the impact of uploading images with ‘burned-in’ text?

I don’t understand how Google isn’t able to scan the text in an image when plenty of other sites / search engines seem perfectly capable of doing it.

Will these images not feature because I used a 3rd party to create them and added text there?

  • @joelmarrinan thanks for sharing your feedback and inquiries!

The plugin is a way to create and publish Web Stories which is a visual story telling format for the web. Read more about the format here.

In that way, it is not the same type of tool as Canva. Canva can certainly be used to make images / videos to upload to the pages of your story. In terms of text, note that the Web Story is actually built with HTML code (using the AMP framework).

HTML is what search engines use to read the content of your pages and determine how they will appear in search. The “burned-in” text would not appear in the HTML. If the SEO value of your text is important, we recommend using the plugin editor’s text element to overlay on your images/ videos.

    Joel,

Let me add my 2 cents to this. For any agnst you have about the burned-in text and working through whatever issues you are having with the plugin, you will be pleasantly surprised at the results you get when you follow Google’s recommendations.

Treat everything they are putting out in terms of how to construct the story and (text/images/seo/etc) as as a receipt.

Like all receipts, you have to try them multiple times before they start to become perfect.

Each time I strictly follow the receipt the better results we see.

    Hope this helps.

    Terry
