With the upcoming release of Gutenberg, either direction you take would no longer work once 5.0 is released assuming you upgrade (unless you use the Classic Editor plugin). Once you upgrade to 5.0, the recommended course of action would probably be to make a Gutenberg block.

@boda1982, thank you for the info, i am very much out of touch with WP development and wasn’t even aware a new editor was being implemented.

@joyously, i looked into shortcodes, but i need the outputted HTML to be editable,a shortcode would not allow this.

EDIT (thank you Joy, had not seen that particular snippets plugins and that will work for me until i can come up with a fancier solution.)
