Update: I have ZenCache plugin if it helps to know that.

How can I know if my cache is getting large?

On AO’s settings page the number of files in cache is displayed.

    hope this helps,

Thank you for your reply, Frank

Unfortunately, I had to disable the plugin.

On Google PageSpeed it moved “eliminate render-blocking code” on desktop from red to orange, but it remained in red on mobile. This was my main reason for trying the plugin, but maybe I was expecting something it isn’t designed for?? I did select the options for JavaScript and CSS in the settings.

It also changed the way my home page opened and made several of my other pages very slow.

In addition, when I read through your faqs I feel overwhelmed by what needs or may need to be done and checked.

I’m disappointed since there are so many positive reviews. If there’s something I’m not “getting” about this plugin, I’d really appreciate your letting me know.

    Thank you,
    Gail

Lots of questions there Gail ??

Let’s try to break this down:
    1. AO does cannot solve all Google Pagespeed Insight remarks;
    * AO will not optimize non “on site” CSS/ JS (e.g. Google Fonts’ CSS typically is render blocking)
    * AO by default will keep CSS linked in the head of the HTML, where Google considers it render blocking. You can use the “inline all CSS”-option as an alternative
    * if you’re not using a page caching plugin (e.g. hyper cache or wp super caceh) AO can in some cases make your site slower
    2. AO aggregates all “on site” Javascript and all CSS, but this can indeed break things in which case you have to configure AO to act differently using the (advanced) settings for either CSS or JS (or sometimes even both).

Summary; AO isn’t a magic silver bullet, but given time & effort it can help you improve your site’s performance & pagespeed rating. Some technical knowledge might be needed to configure everything perfectly, but I’m always willing to lend a hand (by looking at your site and advising what to do).

    Hope this clarifies,
    frank

Thank you so much for your replies. I’m a little overwhelmed with getting my website up and going now and I’d like to give AO another try later when things settle down for me. It helps to know you’re willing to lend a hand. I’ll mark this topic as resolved. Thanks again and have a nice day. Gail
