I have a weird bug that I have not been able to figure out. Something in my site is caching the alt text for images.

As far as I can tell the plugin is the only one doing any caching is hummingbird. The “full” size image when selected shows the old alt text. When I inspect the element using web developer tools it shows the old alt text. But when I view the source it shows the correct alt text. When I look in the database for the alt text I see the new alt text. Web developer tools usually shows the rendered code after scripts have manipulated so my conclusion is there has to be a script somewhere still rendering a cached version.

When I deactivated hummingbird it didn’t seem to solve the problem. We are also using elementor and hello elementor for the theme. Its a live site so I can’t easily turn those off though. Its hosted on my private server so its not caching provided by the host.

    Hi @sgumby

    I hope you’re well today!

Let me start from the end ??

When I deactivated hummingbird it didn’t seem to solve the problem.

This is actually important information. It means that even if Hummingbird is really causing such issue, it’s not the only thing involved. Hummingbird doesn’t make any permanent/physical changes to the site’s files (e.g. to template files etc) and the moment you disable it, all the caching/asset optimization should be gone as well.

If it stays, it means that either there is yet another caching layer – some sort of cache (on server or CDn such as CloudFlare) – or some feature that acts similarly to caching.

But getting back to the main issue:

    1. you mentioned selecting full size image – what do you mean by that exactly? Do you mean looking in the Media Library or editing the page with Elementor (so when you select image there)? Or do you actually mean checking (“inspect” option of browser tools) image on front end?

    2. if it’s front-end, could you share a link to some example page on your site so we could take a look? If yes, which image there should we check and what would be its correct alt?

    3. also, since deactivating Hummingbird doesn’t fix that, does simply clearing its cache help or it doesn’t fix that as well?

    Kind regards,
    Adam

    1. When you are editing a page or a post and select an image in wordpress (elementor, or some other editor) it gives you some default sizes. Full is one of those. Full was selected by the previous person working on the site. When I update the alt text it does not update. If I select a different size image (medium, small, thumbnail, 1024×1024) and update the alt text it does update.
    2. I have to finish this project today so by the time you read this I’ll have figure out a work around. And there isn’t any way to submit urls privately here.
    3. Clearing the cache didn’t help.

I didn’t build this site. I took over hosting and managing it last month.

I think it was hosted on wpmu servers when I took over….the ftp still works if there is a way for me to share that to you privately. It has wpmu plugins mixed in all over. Brando pro (I deactivated), SmartCrawl Pro (I deactivated), wpmu dev dashboard (I deactivated). Nothing I deactivated seems to disable the cache. I do think that wpmu dev has some cdn built in so maybe that is it.

Ok……..I tracked down the problem. Not hummingbird. Thanks for your help on this.

alliai . com implements its self in a way that is very much hidden and a complete pain in the butt to find and turn off.
