Caching dependant on MySQL?

MediaTemple had an issue today which brought a website we look after, down for a while.
Despite having wp-super-cache installed, visitors were greeted with “Error establishing database connection”
Is wp-super-cache dependant on MySQL to serve cached files?

Identified – We are receiving reports of upgrades causing issues with MySQL. This is a result of updated software, and will require you to update your MySQL database user passwords. Since these updates affect PHP, your sites may encounter compatibility issues. Changing to an earlier version of PHP may address these issues. Please see this (mt) Media Temple Community article for more information on how to change your PHP version:
