• Just downloaded a MaxBlogPress plugin. The problem isn’t with the plugin. In fact it is a half-decent plugin. What MaxBlogPress does is require you to activate the plugin, but in a way unlike any other plugin.

After you click the button to activate the plugin you are sent a confirmation email. When you click the confirmation link you are taken to a high pressure sales letter.

Typically, I refuse signing up for ‘newsletters’ (that are really a sales message), but somehow ended up receiving the MaxBlogPress ‘newsletter’ anyway. After the first spam arrived I unsubscribed. Maybe that will put a stop to their ‘newsletters’–we’ll see.

I don’t mind that developers ask for donations. After all they have worked hard and their contributions are valued. What I don’t like is being confronted with high pressure sales pitches and ‘newsletters’ that are really spam.

Because of this developers high pressure sales tactics the plugin has been deleted.

Hopefully, WordPress agrees that this type of manipulation is unwelcome and MaxBlogPress high pressure sales tactics are unwanted in the WP community.

  • Personally, I would really hate to see these wonderful plugins removed from the site. I use many of them and the fact that I had to sign up to a newsletter did not bother me in the least. It cost me nothing to use these wonderful plugins that help me monetize my blogs. And you only have to sign up once to use every plugin they create.

Plus, the newsletter I get from them has taught me a lot. I am an old developer (20+ years) and could probably write any of these plugins myself, but why? To save a few bytes in my inbox? Fact of the matter here is that they use aWeber to sign you up to a newsletter, and aWeber DOES NOT tolerate the use of the email lists created through their service to be SPAMmed. So you are protected by a third party – not that the wonderful people at MaxBlogPress would ever SPAM you anyway.

And if you are that worried about getting SPAMmed, just create a free Yahoo or Gmail account and use that for signup. Problem solved!

Yes, but they should be opt-in or at the very least opt-out. But there are no such options. They are register for the newsletter or don’t use the plugin.

So you feel that everything that anyone does, including apps to help you make money, should be free to use with no strings and no obligations? Would you use their plugins if you had to pay money for them before you get to try them out? Do you feel ShareWare is wrong?

Bottom line people – it costs you nothing but a few clicks of the mouse to gain access to some very useful tools. If you can’t afford that, find another plugin. Don’t chastize them because they found a way to promote their service by giving you free stuff.

How many of you have a “preferred customer” card at the grocery store? Did you give them your address on the registration form? How about at your favorite electornics store, like Best Buy or Office Depot? Oops, better stop doing that – they’ll spam you and you won’t even know it! How is this any different? Should we ban all of these customer loyalty programs too?

I have never seen a high pressure sales page or anything when signing up for their newsletter, and you don’t have to read their emails, and you can unsubscribe right away (barring any technical glitches). I was also never forced to pay one thin dime for any of their plugins, but I have purchased a few items from them that make my life easier and help me make money from my blog. If you want to make money from your blog, pony up first – you get nothing for free!

I guess this thread is really just someone complaining because they can’t get what they want handed to them on a silver platter. I will make this my last post here, because it’s like trying to teach an old dog new tricks.

Oh, and in case you are thinking it, I am NOT in any way affiliated nor do I have any connection with MaxBlogPress aside from a satisified user of their very wonderful plugins. Thank you, and good night.

    Why not bookmark his site?

Let this one slip through and watch what happens, every internet marketer under the sun will be submitting plugins where you have to sign up to spam lists.

So you are ok for the WP Repo to wind up like that, where you can’t get a plugin without signing up to spam lists, visiting a string of sites?

What next, send the user to a landing page to complete a survey which earns the author a couple of bucks because it costs you nothing right? How about make them install a “free” toolbar before downloading the plugin?

Heard the saying, give them an inch and they will take a mile?

If the line is not drawn soon, watch what happens.

This is not a particularly useful thread.

If you have a problem with the way any plugin works, or feel that it’s somehow violating the rules, then you need to report it here: https://www.ads-software.com/report-bugs/

That will bring it to the attention of people who will make the decision on it. Bottom line: It’s their call.

    Closed.
