call to cron.php yields tons of errors

Finally complete “setup” of the free version, and then used the browser to call an “echo-laced” version of cron.php, and got the following errors/notices (and nothing gets read from mailbox, even though the group setup tests passed OKAY (and there ARE messages in the target mailbox):
