Can a WordPress site be accessed using a split DNS?

With domain mapping plugin, we can access the same site from different hostnames. I am not sure this makes anything more or less secure as the content is the same for both hostnames.

I do not see any domain mapping plugin compatible with 4.1.1

It works for us. My university has a huge multisite installation using WP 4.1.x using the domain mapping plugin. In addition we have a couple of other installations also using the domain mapping plugin… smaller instances but serving critical university functions.

FYI, our use case for same site with multiple URLs is different than yours. From what I understand some departments change their hostname/url, but we leave the old hostname available for a while during the transition.

That plugin is still compatible. It’s safe to use.
