• I’m new to wordpress and doing some checking before I download the files.

Can I completely customize the entire blog? What parts can I customize using CSS?

    Thanks!

  • You can customize everything – WP is theme based and you can customize the look 100% ??

    Thanks! That’s very helpful.

Another question, I went ahead and downloaded the files as I was writing that & just decided to delete if needed.
I can’t seem to get the wb-admin install page to work.

I get “error establishing a database” and I don’t seem to know the problem. My domain is: https://www.mindysdesigns.com/Blog/wp-admin/install.php

Is it a problem that I put the files inside the folder “Blog”?

I had no problem changing the wb-admin config file.

doesnt matter what your directory is called, just be sure that the wp-config.php file is edited correctly. What error did the install give you?

    “Error establishing a database connection”

I am not sure what I could have done incorrectly, I followed the steps in the installation process perfectly and in my cpanel, everything worked fine with the name & database names.

who is your hosting company? some hosting companies (for example: godaddy) require you to use their database name they give you, instead of “localhost”… so it would be helpful to us, so that we can better help you, if you could let us know who your hosting company is, what kind of server/software are they using, that sort of thing.

The more info you can give us, the better we can help. ??

    Sure!

I use WebHostingBuzz – Linux operating system, Uses Cpanel – 4.3.11 PHP version, Apache Version: 1.3.34 Unix.

    Anything else you need?
    Thanks for your help.

When you go in to set up your database, and you check the settings, does it give you something like: mysql23.someservername.net as the database location?

You have created a database and made a user for it?

I just went to their site and saw this:

Following scripts can be autoinstalled using Fantastico De Luxe. Installation procedure takes seconds and can be performed by novices without the need of setting up MySQL databases, importing structure, chmoding files and without the need of other tasks usually associated with installations:

    FREE BLOG SCRIPTS
    b2evolution (website )
    Nucleus (website )
    pMachine Free (website )
    WordPress (website )

Did you try setting up WordPress through their system?

No it doesn’t. Yes I had picked a database name & user name.

I just found Fantistico inside my Cpanel and it allowed me to instantly download WordPress there – I’m inside my dashboard now.

I guess that installed it more directly?

If cPanel, read the cPanel section under the Installation here: https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/ and pay special attention to the Really Important Bit!

Some hosting companies will provide this for you so that it sets it up using their server/db settings (either a) to make it easier on novice users, or b) because they don’t want to have to explain their settings, etc.)

Either way, you’re up and running now, so all is well, right?! ??

    Don’t confuse her, moshu! ?? ??
She appears to have it all set… am I right?

Yes I’m good to go. Thanks so much!

Now I’m just reading & getting an idea of where I can customize and re-write and so on.

Thanks for the help. I’m sure I’ll post another question at some point. =)

No sweat – you can FTP up themes and such, and then either copy and paste the files from the theme editor to your HTML editor of choice (I do this, so as to have a backup) and then edit to your heart’s content, copy and paste back into the theme editor – or just do your coding inside the theme editor… ??

    try https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Themes/Theme_List for themes ??
