I received this question from my client…
I have a question, a client bought a gift certificate for $100 and she’s trying to purchase an item for $80

She told me her coupon code “merry” won’t cover taxes or shipping…
Is there something I can do to fix the coupon code to allow this??

Obviously I could set free shipping but this would give the customer $100 to spend PLUS free shipping
Can woocommerce do this? If not are there any recommended plugins that would add this?

Hi there!

Thanks for reaching out. I completely understand that this could be very frustrating!

Your client is correct that coupons are discounted before shipping/tax is applied by default. This does make it tricky when Coupons are greater than the total, yet a small shipping fee is still applied for the purchase.

I found a couple of third-party plugins that might do the trick for you. (One is a tad outdated, so be sure to back up your site before using. Or you could also test it on a staging site.) However, one of the options will at least let you control whether or not shipping is deducted with your use of coupons, and the other might work for both tax and shipping because it changes when discounts are being applied (before or after the total, which should affect taxes.)

WooCommerce does not officially support these extensions though, so you’d have to use at your own risk. The other alternative is to seek a custom solution: https://woocommerce.com/customizations/
