I see few of my attachment is index and I would like to know if it a good practice canonical media url that are on google search to pages/post.

So instead of user find media url they would be redirect to page related.

    Thanks

    Hello Frogger,

Thanks for reaching out about your attachment pages. I believe the setting you are looking for should be in WordPress > SEO > Search Appearance > Media.

When you upload media (an image or video for example) to WordPress, it doesn’t just save the media, it creates an attachment URL for it. These attachment pages are quite empty; they contain the media item and maybe a title if you entered one. Because of that, if you never use these attachment URLs, it’s better to disable them, and redirect them to the media item itself.

Therefore, for the option to Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself, we recommend you set this to Yes.

    Thank you for replying.

When I select YES at “Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself?”

It doesn’t show anymore the option if I want media to show on search or not.

    1. So what does it mean? It will be on search or not?

    2. Can I use on which individual media Yoast setup the URL canonical to redirect the attachment URL on search to be redirect to a page, like homepage or a post? If that is good for SEO or not.

    Thanks

    Hi @engenheirouva

    1. If you select ‘yes’ for the ‘redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself’ then the ‘attachment URL’ will 301 redirect to the media item itself.

So the attachment URL itself wouldn’t appear in the search results anymore, as it would ultimately redirect to the image or media item itself.

    2. If you set the option to ‘no’ then you’ll be able to edit the attachment URL and modify the canonical URL there. However, we’re not sure of the SEO implications on this if it would be beneficial to redirect it to the homepage or another post.

Our implementation of redirecting thin attachment URLs to the actual image or media item itself makes sense as it would best serve the users. Unless of course, for cases such as a photography site that would actually benefit from having attachment URLs and it not being considered as ‘thin content’.
