• The 3.8 update made my back end very hard to use. I was hoping that 3.8.1 would fix it, but it still has the two main problems I’m encountering:

First, when I look at a listing of posts, there seems to be no way to change the column widths. The teeny-tiny amount of space allotted to the “Title” column means that I can see about 5 posts on my screen at a time, making it a pain in the ass to scroll through the list. I could eliminate some of the other columns, but then I can’t find the information I want on each post, such as publication date, comments, categories, tags, author, etc.

Does anyone know how to change column widths on the “All Posts” view?

Next, the widget listing on the “Appearance>Widgets” page is pretty much unusable as is. Is there any way to go back to the 3.7 view? Or at least make the width of the widgets listing portion of the page much wider?

Thanks to anyone who can help. I’m not a WP programmer or coder, just a hobby blogger using WordPress because it’s generally simple and easy to use. I’m finding that less so with the 3.8.1 version.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Thanks for the quick response!

I’m not having any problems with any of the plugins.

It’s the WP Admin area itself that is the issue.

Please try the steps I suggested above.

OK, I’ll have a bash at it.

Will I lose all the customizations I’ve done on my theme if I switch to “default?”

    (@tmacdonaldulr)

OK, I tried deactivating all the plugins.

The “All Posts” view still squeezes the title into a tiny width and I can’t find any way to widen it.

The “Appearance>Widgets” view still smooshes all the widgets into two narrow columns on the left of the page, with no way to widen them or switch to more columns.

I’ll switch to the default theme if it won’t mess up my customizations on the theme I’m currently using. Let me know.

Oh, also– Is the “default” theme 2012, 2013, or 2014? I’m showing all in my “themes” listing.

Also I have no clue how to do anything by FTP or PHPMyAdmin, that’s scary.

The current default theme is 2014.

    (@tmacdonaldulr)

Oh, I have 2011, too. Is that the “default theme?”

The current default theme is 2014.

Will I lose my current theme customizations if I switch to 2014?

No. Your theme’s settings are saved in your database and should be retained for future use.

    (@tmacdonaldulr)

OK, I changed to 2014 (which is cool, BTW, I might look at whether or not I can adapt my current design to use this theme!)

And the “All Posts” view still squeezes the title into a tiny width and I can’t find any way to widen it.

The “Appearance>Widgets” view still smooshes all the widgets into two narrow columns on the left of the page, with no way to widen them or switch to more columns.

    Other ideas?

Or is this just one of those “sorry, everyone else using WP thinks this is fine, you’ll just have to live with it” things?

I really appreciate the help, BTW!

What size/resolution browser screen are you using?

I’m on a 24-in. monitor on my desktop, the resolution is pretty good: 1920 x 1080
