• The 3.8 update made my back end very hard to use. I was hoping that 3.8.1 would fix it, but it still has the two main problems I’m encountering:

First, when I look at a listing of posts, there seems to be no way to change the column widths. The teeny-tiny amount of space allotted to the “Title” column means that I can see about 5 posts on my screen at a time, making it a pain in the ass to scroll through the list. I could eliminate some of the other columns, but then I can’t find the information I want on each post, such as publication date, comments, categories, tags, author, etc.

Does anyone know how to change column widths on the “All Posts” view?

Next, the widget listing on the “Appearance>Widgets” page is pretty much unusable as is. Is there any way to go back to the 3.7 view? Or at least make the width of the widgets listing portion of the page much wider?

Thanks to anyone who can help. I’m not a WP programmer or coder, just a hobby blogger using WordPress because it’s generally simple and easy to use. I’m finding that less so with the 3.8.1 version.

  • My screen is almost as large and I’m not seeing any squashing of columns.

Maybe you don’t have as many columns selected?

I have Title, Author, Categories, Tags, Comments, Date, Total Views, Today’s Views, and ID#.

In 3.7, the same columns were displayed with a much wider “Title” column.

I have all available columns/panes selected on my testing sites.

    OK, weird.

I did think it might be the “Reveal ID” plugin, so I tried deactivating just that (again) but it still squishes the title into a narrow column.

With any luck, someone else will have an idea about that, or about the problem viewing the Appearance>Widgets page.

    Thanks again for your help!

Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Fourteen theme with all plugins deactivated?

OK, I tried that, and it made ALL the columns a tiny bit wider because the “ID” column disappeared.

Now I’m wondering if it’s the StatCounter link in my JetPack, which seems to remain “on” even when the JetPack plugin is deactivated.

If that is the case, I’ll just have to live with it until WP and/or the plugin/StatCounter folks resolve the issue, because I need that plugin.

I had this exact same problem – and reading through this thread, I realized I had too many columns checked to show up. So I unchecked all the numerous ones I didn’t really need and now everything is fine. It would be nice if we could re-size these columns though and have a few more columns show up.

But I had many added columns from plugins and I don’t really need most of them. So… problem solved.

    Thanks!

I had the same issue. Turns out my issue was related to WP SEO. When I installed the SEO plug, it added several new columns including SEO, SEO Title, Meta Desc, etc.

If you click the Screen Options drop down, you can uncheck some of them. Hope this helps someone.
