    1. How do I delete the folders named “2011” and “05” without destroying the link to the images. I don’t want to have to upload each and every image all over again?

    2. What is the reasoning for WP to create an image folder named “05”? I mean if all of the images were just stored in the folder named “Images” (Uploads > Images) then that would make more sense to me, but there must be a reason why WP wants to create a sub folder named 2011 and 05. Why do they want to store images this way. What is there reasoning for doing it this way? Please explain!

    3. Does WordPress create a new image folder automatically every month? For example if WP is storing images in 2011/05 (May 2011) then next month will there be another folder named 2011/06 ? (for June). Or is it just named 2011/05 because I started the Blog in May 2011?

You may think I’m crazy for asking this but I don’t want to upload 100’s of images and then find out I don’t want them to be organized by month. Does that make any sense? ?? Is there somewhere I can read something to make more sense about how WordPress saves and stores images by year and month for example?

    1) Not easily. You would have to move them all to a new place and then search/replace in the database.

    2) Because some hosts limit the number of files you can have in a folder, and splitting by date is as sensible as any other reason.

    3) Yes, next month’s image go in 2011/06 ??

Settings->Media has an option for this that you can disable if you don’t want it: “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders”.

Which doesn’t IIRC move the existing ones. For that you need to move and search/replace.

Just seems backwards to me cause how do you search for an image then if you can’t remember what months folder it was created in?

Thanks Otto. I’ve read that it’s best to delete the Year/Month folders and just put all images in the “Uploads” folder but that may be old info. Anyone know what the “best” practice would be?

Thanks Ipstenu, so what do you mean by “Which doesn’t IIRC move the existing ones. For that you need to move search/replcae?”

Ipstenu means that existing files will not be moved when you change that option. Your images will still be in 2011/05. So you’ll have to move those out yourself and update the links by doing a search and replace.

Subsequent uploads will show up in 1 folder.

I use the media tool within WordPress, personally. ??

And fonglh was correct. Your existing files (in /yyyy/mm/ folders) WILL NOT be moved if you change the uploads location. You have to move them manually.

Some advice on how to do that here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/how-to-move-uploaded-files-folder?replies=14

Thnks everyone. Ok, so they recommend using the “Search and replace” plugin. Supposed to work really well.

Two things I’m not understanding still are:

    1. If I change my images folder structure so all images are in “Uploads” (no Year and Month folders) and the at some point I install a new version of WP then will the new version of WP overwrite my image folder structure or will it add the Year and month folders again?

    2. So from what everyone is saying it looks like it’s not good practice to remove the “Year” and “Month” folders from the images folder like this:

    (Uploads > ball.jpg, cat.jpg, etc.)

but it’s better to leave it as:

    (Uploads > 2011 > 05 > ball.jpg, cat.jpg, etc.)

    Is this correct?

No. Once changed, the change sticks.

    Yes ??
