Can I get my latest posts to appear as featured posts?

Hello,

I’m using a child twentyfourteen theme, and have featured tag working nicely on the homepage. However, to prevent things from getting stale, I need to modify the theme so that it displays the latest posts as featured content. I’ve looked everywhere for an example, but can’t find anything.

Could someone explain how to do this?
