I’m an artist building my first WP site to promote my work. I’m also a pretty resourceful person in other areas, and would like to run a “blog on the side” wherein I post general useful information: Living Inexpensively, DIY, etc.

Is it possible to run a second “Useful Info” blog inside my “Artist” website/blog – and still have just ONE relatively simple WordPress site? Or would I have to make a second WP blog site for “Useful Info”, and create links to that?

Rather than making a second blog or a single blog that’s too complex for me to administer, it appears I can create a CATEGORY such as “Useful Info” and perhaps some sub-categories:

I’m using Themify’s Basic theme (which includes ThemeBuilder). I created a PAGE entitled “Useful Info”. The “Themify Custom Panel” has a “Query Posts” feature that enables me to display multiple posts of a particular Category (Useful Info) on that page.

Is that a good way to approach this?

    Thanks

  • Hello again ??

Just try adding a category to a post called “Useful info”.

Then you can create a menu item that shows all posts that have that category.

Appearance > Menus > Edit menus
In the box on the left you will see Pages, Links, Categories.
Open the Categories, select your category and add it to the menu.

You do not need to create a page called Useful info.

    YOU AGAIN?! <BIG grin>

I’m really glad you posted in this thread. Thanks. That’s a powerful method you describe. I’ve been using the Appearance > Menus > Edit Menus screen, but hadn’t noticed that CATEGORIES can be linked destinations. Wow. I’m struggling with WP and sometimes wish for “the old days of html and a little CSS”, but then I see a feature like this and realize the WP benefits outweigh my learning-curve difficulties.

I just employed your suggestion, and it works beautifully. The only snag is:

You and I met in my thread regarding what type of front page I needed. It turned out I did not need a static front page, just needed to have the latest posts display on the site’s front page. Part of your elegant solution was to limit blog pages to displaying just one (1) post at a time.

It looks like that limitation also causes my “Useful Info” Link test posts to display one at a time (I tested by increasing the max-posts-per-page from 1 to 10, which allowed multiple posts to display). That’s not a problem, but I really would like to display several posts in except form – and I’m pretty sure there’s no getting around that limitation for me, a hapless non-coder? <lol>

On the other hand, the Themify Builder tools enable me to display multiple Posts (in excerpt form) on the “Useful Info” page that I created. So it’s a workaround of sorts for that single-post display limit. If I could figure out how to post a link to my localhost XAMPP installation, I’d show you.

On the OTHER(3rd) “other hand”, insights gained from your advice have me thinking I might actually want more than one post to appear on my front page. A whole new approach for me. Thank you.

If you don’t mind my asking, are you “Down Unda” (The Land of OZ)? I noticed how that excellent link you furnished (weblines.com.au) is an Australian firm. I’m curious because many good things that happen to me come out of Australia.

Hi no I am in Norht America and the link is just one I found Googling.

Well that link was surprisingly complete in resolving my confusion, so once again, an EXCELLENT result for me from Down Under <grin>.

    Thanks

I have another active thread, with no resolution thus far.

If you have time and inclination, would you take a look at the issue and see if any fix occurs to you?

The thread deals with assigning a destination to my ‘HOME’ main nav menu link – now that I no longer have an actual “Front Page”…

    HERE’S THE LINK

    It’s always sumthin’ right?
    Thanks
