Is it possible to switch posts that were created as Custom Posts using the “Custom Content Type Manager” plug-in to “Custom Post Type UI” custom posts? I have a site with a couple hundred posts that were placed into 2 main custom post types (Weird Science and Strange Times). But the site was made many years ago and, well, the “Custom Content Type Manager” isn’t really supported any longer. In fact it was hacked a while back and it just doesn’t seem as robust as yours.

But when I activate Custom Post Type UI, I don’t see these content types. I noticed in another answer you mention that the UI only supports “publicly supported” content types and I guess these aren’t. Any hope I can migrate to Custom Post Type UI?

We don’t automatically import/list external post types/taxonomies, say in our “Registered Types/Taxes” menu item. That list is only for what has been registered with our plugin.

The biggest thing that you’ll want to do is make sure that you’re setting the post type slugs to be the same as what you already have, when setting up and saving within our plugin. If the slug is “weird_science”, then you’ll want that same for the first field with CPTUI. The rest of the settings will have to be a bit of matching, as we don’t have any import process for settings from other plugins.

As long as “Custom Content Type Manager” doesn’t delete its content when deactivating/deleting the plugin, all your content should stay put and be ready for CPTUI to take over without having to move the content itself. We just need to change who does the registering.

Just in case, it won’t hurt to make sure you have a fresh backup, but I am hopeful that things will be really smooth.

Thanks for your help! Okay, this is going to sound crazy. It works for ONE of the Custom Post Types and not the other. The only difference between them is one slug is strange_times and the other is weird-science. Strange Times, the one with the UNDERSCORE works great and when I turn off the old plug in I still see the content type. But weird-science (with a hyphen) SEEMS to allow me to create it. It tells me it already exists. When I save it, the page refreshes, but it does not show up under my list of Post types when I go to Add or Edit.

Maybe hyphens aren’t supported? I suppose the next thing for me to try would be to run the database through a find/replace and change every single instance on weird-science to weird_science and then switch it?

Before 1.8.0 we were forcing underscores in place of hyphens, because i mistakenly thought it was a requirement for post types. However, not the case and I undid that for the post types only. Taxonomies seem to require still based on what I can see.

The database switch won’t matter unless you do for sure decide to switch between them. Post types are registered at run time internally. So no actual db setting to edit, technically.

Looks like you’re still on WP 5.4.2 which means you’re not getting notified of new 1.8.0 updates for CPTUI, due to requiring WP 5.5

Hey Michael, the development site I am working on is actually on WP version 5.5.1 and running 1.8.0 of the plugin. I shared the link to where the site WAS, but I’m working on updating it. The dev site is (for example) https://racingnelliebly.us/strange-times-victorian-era-people-customs-inventions/
But, alas, “Nimble Builder” doesn’t see the custom post type of ‘strange_times’ and just shows all posts.

So I’ve 2 problems. weird-science not showing up and the page builder not seeing the custom content type as something to filter on. If you want to have a look under the hood, I’ll share the log in with you if you message mcfwitt [at] gmail dot com. I’d be happy to pay you for your time if we can solve this.

Also, I’m not married to nimble builder as the WYSIWYG page editor. It just seemed to be well-supported by the Customizr theme I’m using. But at this stage, I could use any theme and any plug in.

Again. thanks for looking at this!

Can you actually reach out to [email protected] and reference this forum thread so I know what it’s related to?

With the weekend here things may be delayed a little bit on my end but that shouldn’t stop you from trying things on your own still. My biggest questions/concerns are around getting the post type settings moved in to CPTUI and accurately compared to the previous plugin. Things regarding the content and display I could provide some help with, but hard for me to say for sure. I could easily believe there being custom code helping with integration, but we’d need to see.
