• Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me figure out if this is possible.

I have a WordPress 3.0.1 Multisite installed on my hosting account with Host Gator on a shared server. Some of the sites within that install/network get decent traffic (4 sites getting about 1,000 unique visitors each day), one of the sites on occasion gets a big bump in traffic up to 6000-8000 in a single day.

This has caused HG to suspend my entire blogging network because at times my account takes up more than 25% of the server CPU. It has happened twice in the past 3 weeks now. I have made some changes to decrease the server load which has remedied the problem for now.

I don’t think it is worth moving to a VPS or Dedicated server at this time because they are a lot more expensive, offer less bandwidth, and I just don’t feel traffic supports that big a move.

What I want to do is set up a second account with HG and move three or four of the blog sites to that account, but still have them all as part of the main network.

For example: Main Network – https://www.worldblogosphere.com
Want to move these blogs: https://www.extraordinaryintelligence.com
    https://www.thewrestlingwrapup.com
    https://www.movieodyssey.com

Is there a way I can do this without causing a problem or losing any posts and info? Would all the global tags still work the same way?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • What about using the WordPress Export and Import processes to do that?

    Administration > Tools > Export
    Administration > Tools > Import

    That won’t work.

Either bump up to a VPS (yes, you need one) or move those sites to a different web account on their *own* network.

The only way multisite works with more than one server is if you’re doing heavy-duty scaling. On dedicated boxes, not different shared web hosting accounts. ??

    Thanks Michael and Andrea.

If I am upgrading to the VPS server should I just let HG transfer everything over?
    OR
Should I start it from scratch and use the Import and Export tool to move everything over?

I had big spam problem along the way. My blog ID numbers are in the thousands when there are only about 30-50 actual blogs left that weren’t spam. So, would it be better to like I say do a fresh install and then import everything into the new databases?

I recently imported a site from WordPress.com and I had some issues. The posts weren’t attached to any categories, and all the posts that had comments were listed as 0 comments, yet you could see all the comments. Would the same thing happen if I tried the import method?

    Thanks again for the help.

Let your host do the transfer and clean out all those spam blogs before they do.

    Thanks Andrea.

They are cleaned out, but new blogs get an ID like 12000 and so on. I was just wondering if it would be better to be 1-50 or whatever range rather then 1-25, and then some in the 10000s and such.

The numbers are only used internally. It really makes no difference how large they get.
