• I am currently using WP 2.2 and have recently had it transferred to a new server and am experiencing problems that no one knows how to fix. It is urgent to fix, so I thought of reinstalling WP, but am reluctant. Is there a way to reinstall WP without losing everything, and is easy to do?? I am not a programmer and only have limited knowledge about WP, Php and the likes.

  • Yes it is, but what are the problems?
If you can describe them maybe we can help?

Seems I’ve seen this problem mentioned a few times in the last couple of weeks.

podz, I did what you told me to do with getting rid of the pings and re-installing my post.php, but it didn’t help. My problem is that when I go to post something a download box appears trying to download a post.php file. I cancel that and when I try to go to somewhere else in the admin panel I get that download box with whatever I am trying to go to .php file. I have to sign out and login again to get things working and the post that I originally tried to publish is published!

I need to reinstall WP now. No one seems to know how to fix the problem. Can someone please tell me how to reinstall WP without losing all my stuff?? PLEASE!!

You say you have problems that no one can fix.
Is the database ok? If so, back it up – run the install or upgrade – you did read the documentation on upgrades – and check it out.
You did read the documentation on upgrading – right? It works like a charm for 99% of users.

I’ve played with this a little bit but not on different servers. I wanted to test the process of reinstalling WP via backups. In the process I backed up everything all the files and the database. I then wiped out everything… deleted the database and all the files from the server.

Then re-uploaded the entire directory containing my wp files and imported my database backup via PHP My Admin. Everything seemed to work just fine. When I uploaded the files I did not run the install or upgrade. With the database… it’s important that the db name, user name and password all stay the same as originally had at your old host. I have the process I used documented at:
    https://blog.sammyrusso.com/simple-maintenance-backup-everything/

Being that you are installing on a new server you might need to run the install and then import the database, but I’d try it without running the install first and see what how that works. As long as you have recent backups of everything you shouldn’t have problem and should take you less than hour.

    Hope this helps.
