A real basic “can I do this” question:

I have a site that’s been running for… since WordPress 2.x. Its media library is now over 10,000 items, which is causing issues for FTP applications.

The site is not currently set to organise media by year and month – it’s all one big flat directory.

If I enable “Organise my uploads into month- and year-based folders”, WordPress will do so for new uploads going forward, but will this plugin allow me to (manually?) create year and month folders for my existing media library items, and move them (and the thumbnails as well, I imagine), without having to go into every post and re-link the media manually.

Or do I need the Pro version for that?

Also, can I remove the plugin once the reorganisation is done?

    Thanks.

Yes, Matt. With the plugin you can create year/month folders and move your files. For such a large number of files, the pro version would be better since it has pagination when viewing the folder containing all your files and bulk move for moving a large number of files at one time.

Generally links in standard WordPress posts and pages are updated when files are moved, but you first need to test this to verify that it works with you current WordPress configuration. Some themes and page builder plugins store links in a non standard format. We added code to handle updating links some of the more popular themes and plugins. It is a good practice to check the embedded links when moving files.

Yes, you can deactivate and remove the plugin once your are done reorganizing, but the pro version has many useful features such as import/export, media library maintenance and thumbnail management that are helpful for maintaining your site.

Thanks for the reply – I tried it on a second install of the same wordpress version, and it seemed to work OK.

I’m currently only using the 2017 theme, and haven’t ever used the more complex pagebuilder type things.

I’ll try a complete backup of my hosting space, and then get to work seeing if I can migrate a month of the oldest images to see what happens.

    Cheers,
