can I widgetize my main page

I’m designing a site for a local poetry Society and they want me to put in a gallery of poetry excerpts, each one linking to a URL containing the whole poem. I want to do this with a URLed text widgets. Is there any way that I can divide my main page into, say, four columns that are all widget enabled and then stack text widgets in each column?
