Can install new plugins and themes, but can't update existing ones

  • I can install new plugins and themes, but I can’t update my existing ones. I also can’t update the WordPress core.

    When I attempt to update a plugin, I get the following error: “Update Failed: Could not remove the old plugin.”

    When I attempt to update a theme, I get the following error: “Could not remove the old theme. Theme update failed.”

    The requisite permissions are all set to 755.

    When I did attempt to update the active theme, the theme broke and the site went blank. I was able to fix it temporarily by deleting the entire theme via FTP and reinstalling it.

    I have multiple WordPress sites on the same server and only this one has the issues I am describing.
