Try asking your hosts if they use Pure-ftpd or Proftp in WHM.

who is your host as yesterday I had a problem with 1&1 host that one of client uses where it will not unzip any plugins so ended upload using ftp.

We are using pure_ftpd on the server and i’m getting the same error when trying to upgrade. what setting should be checked to fix this problem

There may be an issue when using Pure-ftpd in conjunction with WHM. If this describes your situation, try changing over to Proftp.

Thats a rather common problem, I’ll be looking at it during 3.2 development, so hopefully those of you suffering on that setup should have some relief soon ??

For now, Manually updating via ftp is your only option, aside from changing your environment from pureftpd to proftpd which does not seem to have the same problems, unfortunately, that’s not an option for most people.

@dion: FWIW, it doesn’t appear to be Pure-ftpd itself that’s the problem. I run/maintain quite a few sites that use cPanel+Pure-ftpd and I’ve never had a problem with the auto-upgrade of any of them. The problem appears to specific to larger, reseller-type, accounts where WHM is used.

Ok, Its a specific configuration setting in pure-ftpd when combined with certain WHM installations, better? ??

It’s been traced on one server to be caused by the number of FTP operations being carried out, the ftp server was seemingly rate throttling WordPress, which eventually caused requests to timeout (each operation was taking longer than a second after a few hundred, and given a WordPress core upgrade makes close to a thousand operations..)

There is a simple patch on trac which dramatically sped up upgrades (as well as allowing it to actually upgrade) on a site which was previously failing due to the pure-ftpd combination – https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/attachment/ticket/10913/10913.diff that particular patch only affects the FTP Extension code, so I’ll have to apply that to the other transports and see if it works there as well.
