This is my third day on WordPress, having just moved over from Joomla.

I’ve performed a local install to familiarize myself with WP. Everything went well, except that I am only able to Live Preview and activate the Twenty Thirteen theme. The other two simply show the standard Hello World! text on a white background, and a black column on the left with “Recent Posts” etc. The directory structure is as per the standard WP install.

I’ve spent hours searching for a solution online, without success. My installation details are as follows:

    H:\Server\XAMPP_PHP_5.4.4\xampp\htdocs\mylocalsite
    WordPress 4.0
    XAMPP v.3.0.12
    MYSQL: 5.5.25
    PHP 5.4.4

    Many thanks!

  • Hello World! text on a white background, and a black column on the left with “Recent Posts” etc.

That sounds like the default WP 4.0 Twenty Fourteen theme ??

Twenty Thirteen (default settings) has a header with orange/yellow/brown circles with a dark brown footer with orange links

Twenty Twelve is black text on white background and side bar on the right.

Did you try adding a new theme?

Appearance > Themes > Add New (button, upper left) > pick one, click Install then click Activate when presented (Live Preview | Activate | Return to Theme Installer)

I came from Joomla! as well, and it takes a bit of adjusting to get the way WP does things ??

Lyle, yes, my install has the TwentyThirteen theme (orange/brown circles), TwentyFourteen theme (three pics on top, and girl with pic image with “Featured Images Really Shine With This Theme”) and TwentyTwelve theme (cornfield with trees and cloudy sky).

When I activate the TwentyThirteen theme I see the orange/brown circles, but I don’t see the above images or layout when activating the other two themes.

I think I know what’s happening here. The thumbnails under “Themes” represent what the theme could look like if it were to contain images, however, these images are not included in the theme when it’s activated… one must add one’s own. How was I to know, I come from Joomla! ??
