• I don’t know how to stop my posts from continuing on and on. Isn’t there some point that they should go into archives? I now have 9 posts all going in a row scrolling down. How long does this go on? I have read the codex manual on posts and it doesn’t say anything about this. How do I get control of where the posts go? And how do I select how many posts are on the homepage? Thanks ahead of time for anyone who is willing to help.

  • options>reading> number of posts, is both the answer and solution. pick the number you want.

also, the tread title is to describe your problem.

Thanks for the help it is set on 10 and I am on post 9. Where do the old posts go once I hit 10, into the archives? I set up a page for archives, but don’t know if it actually works as I don’t know what I’m doing.
    Thanks for help,

All of your posts are stored in your database. Limiting the number of posts that show at one time does just that. It limits the number of posts that are visible on your front page at one time. Archives are simply posts that are organized (generally speaking) by creation date. Your database is really nothing more than many tables and rows of specifically organized and formatted text that represents all the actual content you have written.

If you set your limit to 6, you will see that your first three posts are no longer visible on the front page, but are still accessible from your “Archives” menu and page (if you have one). Those too, can be customized. All the archives are, is basically a set of text-filled tables in a database.

In simplest terms, limiting the number of posts to display on your front page only changes the apparent “length” (in relationship to the height of your screen that is), of your blog, or… how far you have to scroll to get to the bottom. Nothing actually goes into an “archive” per say, it simply resides in your database like always, waiting patiently for someone to click on an “archive” link and call it into a page where it becomes visible again.

I understand a little better now I think, however it is all very confusing to me who has no techy knowledge whatsover. So once I get to my 10th post the first post will disappear and go into a database. And if my archive is actually working, and I click on it that first post should show up, it that correct? I’ve been scared to post thinking my posts would disappear and I wouldn’t be able to reach them. I was afraid to get to the 10th post. Sounds crazy, but it’s a true story. I’m clueless, pitiful newbie.
    Thanks for helping.

Not a problem. We were all new at it at one point. My advice to you, is to jump in with both feet. Learn about it now, rather than 6 months down the road when you have 300 posts and a hundred hours of time invested in it only to find out you still don’t know all the basics, and have never made a backup. (I shiver just thinking about it!) ??

Suggestion 1. Always have a recent backup copy of your complete site AND database stored locally just in case you make a change that has an unwanted impact on your site. Learn how to do that.

Suggestion 2. Find out what tools your hosting service has made available to you and how to use them. – FTP services, database management, etc… (you will need those tools for suggestion number 1).

Suggestion 3. Familiarize yourself with all of the features available in your WP administration area, and read as much as you can about how it works in the documentation available on this site.

So, with that out of the way…

So once I get to my 10th post the first post will disappear and go into a database.

ALL of your posts are ALREADY in a database. Setting the post count adjusts how many of them can bee seen at once on the front page of your blog. That’s all it does.

Nothing will disappear unless you delete it. If you want to test it, go change the setting from 10 to 5 and then visit your blog. Depending on your theme, you will probably even see “next” post or “previous” post items on your front page that allow you to page forward and back to older posts. You wont be satisfied until you try it, trust me.

You have a lot of reading to do! Don’t worry, it’s a lot of fun, too.

    Best wishes.

There is a reason for my silly fears. When I first got the blog, I did my first post. I tried to do the read more feature and what happened was I messed up some sort of code php, css or whatever it’s called. And I couldn’t post or access posts for 2 days till I was rescued by a person who could help me get going again, so now I’m scared to try anything. Since I wasn’t working I couldn’t afford to pay a blog tech guy. So there’s my sorry story like many sob!sob!newbies. Oh well, thanks again for the help. Now, I won’t be nervously dreading day 10!
    Cheers,
