I just discovered the excerpt field on the post edit page. So I entered the descriptive text there. The plugin is displaying the custom excerpts, only now the plugin’s “Maximum length of excerpt” limit is overridden and the entire text displays. Any idea?

Yes, that is intentional for two reasons: Some users want to display the custom excerpts unshortend. And another reason is that the custom excerpt can be HTML code. To shorten a HTML code to the maximum length leads to invalid HTML code and unwanted results.

If you want to display the custom excerpt just enter a text not longer than the maximum length.
