• I am developing 1 theme, where i want to use Custom Post Type to manage features of site. When i checked theme using theme-check plugins, it gave me error : register_post_type should be in plugin. So I have created required plugin using TGM Activation. But I am not sure if theme should have require plugins.

  • Hello,

Yes, custom post types should always be in a plugin. You can bundle them with the theme when someone downloads it and document which plugins are needed.

The concept is that the custom post types should continue to exist if the user changes the theme. They might not display correctly, but they should continue to exist, so you put them in a plugin. You could also add template files in your plugin so they’ll display relatively well inside the current theme.
