I do apologize as I figured this question would have been asked but I couldn’t find a post.

I am working for a company who is running a website and they would like to start a blog. I would prefer to manage the blog in WordPress. Is it possible to keep their website as-is and use WordPress to manage https://www.companysite.com/blog, or blog.companysite.com?

Thank you and if there is already a thread answering this question please point me in the direction.

Yes, just as you said, you’ll create the subfolder /blog and install wordpress there. Or as you said you can create the subdomain blog.compnaysite.com and install WordPress there. Both ways work great!

See https://tree.swansonheritage.com/, click on ‘about’ and then one of the blog links to see a whole WordPress site fully functioning within a (very simple and still a WIP) working frameset.
