I attempted Mutlisite installation but it is not working. Is it still possible to use multisite when i have had my site about a year and the second domain a few months? Also does mutlisite let me do what I need?

If they are two separate installs, then no. Multisite cannot “see” the other installation – you’d have to export your other install into the first one as a secodn site.

If you;re only ever going to have two sites, multisite is overkill.

What you needed to do is share a db with both those installs and share the usertable.

Multisite does do that by default, but like I said – you’d have to move the second install.

    Ok thanks.

I was thinking of getting a 3rd wordpress site soon on the same domain.

If you share the DB then does it share the users?

    Thanks,
    Elliot.

If you have separate installs in one db, you have to specify sharing the user table.

If you *are* going to have more than the 2 or 3 sites, then use multisite. But like I said – you’ll have to export the second site you have into the multisite install on your FIRST site.

On my main website: https://www.team-vanity.com im trying to set up mutlisite and following all the steps it says but it is not working. On a new database: /cups i managed to install it there but I dont want that to be the main blog.

    Anyone know why?

    Not enough info.

Enable it on the site you want to be the main blog. you’ll have to export the other current sites into the new network. It can’t “see” other separate installs on the same host.

Hello Andrea, first of all, I want to apologize in advance, should this inquiry sound repetitive but it is a crucial decision that I’m taking on my end in order to achieve, what I think, will be the hassle-free break for all future deployments on my end.

My scenario is the following (might sound typical):
I have multiple sites, setup under multiple domain names, so far, I have used a separate WP installation for each one of them, most of them are based on Premium themes that host user profiles and membership profiles stored in separate Databases which are attached accordingly to each domain name/website.

My question: Can WPMS handle multiple domains/sites from one main domain/site? In other words, can I dedicate one domain in particular (domain1.com) where the users can register and create their profiles, then from this point on, allowing them to navigate from one domain to another using the same login credentials while allowing me to maintain each site from that alpha domain1.com site?

If so, are there any major cons to this approach? Plugins wise, DB conflicts, Different Themes setup, etc. Are these pending on the main site or can each site deploy its own setup after all?

As for the users, I’m aware of the role attributes on WP (Contributor, Editor, Author, Subscriber) and I’m guessing that this probably has a major role on the user profile settings, but what if User A has a Contributor role on website 1 but has a basic user role on Site 2? Can this be managed?

I’m thinking maybe BuddyPress can handle such requests while continuing on with the separate WP installations on each site, but I want to make sure that WPMS can deliver the same results, even better, what about combining BuddyPress and WPMS to achieve such results?

Not sure if I lost you there or if I didn’t provide enough input on my request, I would appreciate any feedback you can provide me.

    Thank you in advance.

    Yes.

Here’s the caveat: it can;t go magically find your current install. You;d have to migrate them all over to the one install and then use the domain mapping plugin.

But your users woudl all be shared, yes. So are all the plugins and themes. (themes can be excluded on a site by site basis)

And yes, this is a pretty common question. ??

    Want an example? Sure..
    wpmututorials.com
    ronandandrea.com
    atypicalife.net

All those are my own sites, all of them are in one network install, all share the same users, plugins, themes. when I need to upgrade, I hit one button.

but what if User A has a Contributor role on website 1 but has a basic user role on Site 2? Can this be managed?

Ever have a blog on wordpress.com? You;re setting up your own version. So yes, if a user has access to blog 1, they cannot post to blog 2 unless they are added to it.

I’m thinking maybe BuddyPress can handle such requests while continuing on with the separate WP installations on each site,

Buddypress does not do this. Again, it needs to be in one install. BuddyPress cannot magically bridge all your separate installations. As far as I know, nothing can.

Thank you for the prompt reply Andrea, and yes I realize its a very common question, wish I could say that I was 100% convinced so far, but it’s beginning to look more promising with the feedback provided.

Alright, so I’ll venture with a fresh install of WPMS on that alpha domain site and from that point on, re-include the other sites within using a fresh install as well, I don’t mind restarting everything from scratch, really, as long as it makes sense to update/modify in the future without the hassle of going through each site at a time. I ‘ll run this setup on demo sites just to validate the Plugin/Theme compatibility issues if any.

    Things to consider:
    – Domain mapping plugin (required to map through the other domains/sites)
    – Themes can be excluded on a site by site basis (Good to know)
    – User/Plugins/Themes can all be shared (Themes can be excluded on a site by site basis)

I’ll have to look into BuddyPress’ implementation, since it’s the only forum plugin (unless I got this one wrong too) that seems to be compatible with WP and that is decent enough to deliver a friendly user accessibility.

BuddyPress is not a forum plugin. ??

If I could find out who’s saying it is, I’d go beat them over the head with my shoe. ??

It is a social network plugin. It *does* have a small forum component in it – which can be disabled. If it *were* a forum plugin, it wouldn’t make sense to disable it, now would it?

People may be confusing it with BBPress, which *is* a forum. like this one. Which is powered by BBpress (not buddypress).

Also go read my archives at wpmututorials.com ?? there will be a test.

Well you know what? Thanks for the wake-up call lol cause I really thought BuddyPress was a forum platform all this time! I think I should digg into things further then just relying on what others say.

This is BBpress? very light I might say, the best forum platform i have found so far is Invision Power board, wished they had a WP plugin that could integrate with the WP database or vice versa.
Once again, thank you Andrea for the heads-up and please, keep your shoes on ?? Hehehe

    Andrea please help me!!!!!

I have been running mulitsite in sub-directory setup with domain mapping for sometime and life is good. However, I have a new challenge.

I need to setup a WP site within a site.

Site (A) will be a video sales pages running theme (A). https://www.domain.com/.

Site (B) will be a members only site running theme (B) the a user will be directed to this site after purchasing a product from Site (A). https://www.domain.com/members/

I know of this setup working for non-MU and was told it works for MU but when I try to add a new site under an existing site I get “Missing or invalid site address.”

What I am doing is taking the path of an existing site and and appending the /members sub directory.

    For example, /(existing site path)/members

Can this be done in MU and how?

The reason is somewhat logical. I want both the sales funnel video sales page and the members areas to be under the same domain while both are driven by WP. Plus I can run a special video sales page theme under the main site and a special members theme under the second site that is tied to my third party shopping cart.

You need a multi network plugin.

You cannot make sub sites from mapped domain just with the domain mapping plugin.

And it’s NOT MU any more. It’s multisite.

LOL…I knew I was gonna get busted calling it MU. I was eating a piece of pizza for breakfast in one hand and typing in the other. I did not want to get pizza juice on my keyboard so I shortened it. But I was thinking, “I should say that I am using MU for short” but was typing this one finder.

I have searched the codex and Internet on multi network plugins. Not much out there and most seems to address a multi user functaionality.

I tried using this one: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/wp-multi-network/ but I am getting errors when I try to reach my member sub site and there is not documentation on setup.

    Any recommendations on a plugin?

    and sorry, Multisite.

    @andrea

https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/wp-multi-network/ seems to be the plug most mentioned.

Do you network activate this plug (seems reasonable) or site activate it?

When I network activated it, it listed only my main blog site but I have 11 other blogs installed.

There are not instruction on what to do. I played around a little I was getting crazy results.

Any feedback would help big time, thanks!
