  • try to copy onecolumn-page.php and save it as home.php

I don’t want my home page to be one column, I want to be able to make post pages (or whatever you call them) one column.

    same thing;

i assume, you set your home page as a static page, and any other page as the post page – which will use home.php.

or you use onecolumn-page.php as the basis for a page template:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Pages#Page_Templates

you might then need to add a custom query before the loop.

I’m sorry if I’m not understanding this. I was under the assumption that you could only have a template for pages, BUT I don’t want one column for pages but my posts.

there is one page.php template to display static pages
    (and some more – see https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Template_Hierarchy )

and then there are page templates as explained here:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Pages#Page_Templates

best way to get used to new ideas: read it, play with it, make mistakes, try it …

Alchymyth, I appreciate you taking the time to reply and trying to help. But I’m not looking for an education on templates. All I want to know is there a way to make a one column layout for posts in the Twenty Ten theme?

I know that you can apply a template to pages, but the things I want to be one column are not pages, but posts. That’s all I want to know – if it’s possible and how can it be done.

Yes. Create a child theme, add a custom one-column page and then use the techniques outlined on this Codex page. Job done.

I’m no coder so most of that stuff is beyond me, but thanks for trying. If anyone does come along who knows a simpler layman’s way to make this happen, please let me know.

esmi, I just tried out what was on those pages you linked me to and it did not do what I wanted. Again I reiterate…

I DO NOT want a PAGE template, but a template for my POSTS.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Again, this is for a page not a post. Also this if for making a bunch of pages from some category. This is not what I am looking for.

I want to know if I can make one column layouts for posts, not pages.

Do you want your blog posts index page to display in a one-column layout, or do you want your single blog posts to display in a one-column layout (or both, perhaps)?

I don’t have a blog. I have a portfolio site. But I’ve written some tutorials (which are posts) and I’d like to have a one column layout for each one.

WordPress has two standard content types: Posts (i.e. blog posts), and Pages.

Please don’t play semantic games. Posts = blog. If you have posts, then yes: you have a blog.

Posts display in two formats: as an index (a list of posts), and as a single post. Which of these (or both, perhaps?) do you want to display in a single-column layout?

I was not playing any games. Anyway, I have made a child theme from Twenty Ten, which I’m using now. I had to get some help doing this, but it seems to be working. All I want to do is have it so my tutorials can be on one column layouts with no sidebars.
