Can You Make a Blog WITHOUT a Theme?

  • I was wondering if its possible to ignore the Theme concept and just use the php template tags to display posts. Couldn’t you then just design the index.php yourself and use the template tags for communication with WP?

    I’m new to PHP and WordPress. I have a deep understanding with HTML and how a website works, but I have not fully grasped PHP.

    I basically would like to have control over the “index” and leave spots where WordPress can fill in…

    I hope someone understands what I am trying to say…

  • yes, but it’s not easy if you don’t understand php and how wp works.

    The way I see it, you’ve got your data (posts and comments etc) in a database, and you’ve got your presentation (theme).

    Without a theme, you’re left with a database and no ability to show anything from the database. That’s what themes are: they use the template tags to display posts and comments. And that’s what the index.php does: it uses the template tags to communicate with WordPress.

    Remember, the idea of a Theme is to control the presentation of the weblog, and presentation includes not just how things are displayed, but also what gets displayed. You can’t have “no presentation”, because then you don’t see anything—you could have the very bare minimum, though.
