Hi! Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

I want text that contains ‘@[email protected]’ (example) without a author link. Its a username format used for ActivityPub. However WordPress / Gutenberg editor always recognizes this as the exisiting author on the website and transforms ‘@[email protected]’ to ‘@user’ with a author link on the published page.

Just to note, the ‘@[email protected]’ does correspond with the WordPress author and domain, but its a format that is also used for the ActivityPub plugin so people can follow content from the WordPress website from any social media with Activitypub.

Any way to turn this function off or cancel the automatic link?

Where are you placing @ references that auto-link? I do not see such behavior when I do that in a plain paragraph block. This could possibly be a feature introduced by a plugin or theme.

One possible work-around that comes to mind is defining a custom shortcode that renders as @. For example [at]. Because the @ char is rendered late in output, it should bypass the auto-linking script.

@bcworkz I didn’t think of that, thanks for the suggestion. Will try it out tomorrow. Will also see if this is theme or plugin related although I doubt it.

To replicate it, you would have to have the following text written in the editor: “@[author]@[domain].[extension]”. Placeholders being the installations’ specific author and domain. When I do, and I hover over this text in the editor, it shows that little balloon with the author and I can’t cancel that. On the published page it then only shows “@[author]”.

But I’ll do some experimenting, also with themes / plugins. To be continued. Thanks again.

I think I’ve misunderstood your objection. I see the user suggestions balloon like you describe. But if you ignore it and type the email address you want, you get the address as plaintext preceded with the intial @ if that’s what you typed. The address shouldn’t truncate to just a user @ reference when the balloon is ignored.

@bcworkz Seems it is related to the ActivityPub plugin. Nothing wrong with WordPress. Will contact the developer. Thanks!
