Cancelling events

Is there a way to cancel an event but have it continue to show in the list of upcoming events so that people can see that it is cancelled? I could add CANCELLED to the event title but I know from experience with other systems that can cause issues (e.g. the permalink might change – yes I can edit that too but then what if there’s something else that’s affected as well), plus I try to keep the names in a consistent format.
