Candidate Application Submission Notification not working

When someone submits an application they are not receiving the candidate notification email, the employer notification is working fine but not the applicant. I am using Pet Sitter theme, updated version. The theme developer is aware of the problem. I was thinking to use post status notifier plugin to as a work around and have realised the status is recognised as “new” for the application but cannot see how to send the notification to the author of the application as when you click on an application on the backend where it says “posted by” it refers to the job author and not the author of the application. Please can you advise how I can fix this problem. I have tried using “candidate” as the recipient and this does not work either. This is of great concern as I have people applying for jobs and not receiving notifications that their application has been successful.
