Cannot access a subdirectory created by me : 404 error

    WordPress is installed in the root of my website and runs fine.
    I installed some customized galleries in a subfolder of my website (protected by an .htaccess password) but I am unable to access them. Every time I access https://www.example.com/photos for instance I get a WordPress 404 error page.
    I did not have that problem with my previous host, which did not allow mod_rewrite, so I guess this is where lies my problem.
    When I protect the root with the same .htaccess password than the subdirectory it works fine.

    Any idea on how to solve that one?
