• Hi all,

I have a static site which I am now adding WP to. I already have two subdomains working. I’ve setup the subdomains as per the steps outlined both here and in other places. However, when I try and access the Dashboard from the Network Admin menu, I get a “Page cannot be found” error. I have added myself as the Admin of each subdomain

The main website is https://www.syngestreet.com. The wildcard is working because I get a default server page if I go to xyz or zzz or 123.syngestreet.com.

WP is working because I can also go to https://www.syngestreet.com/index.php. I have setup permalinks as Month and Name – https://syngestreet.com/index.php/2013/10/sample-post/

I’ve obviously just missed something very small (I hope)

    Thanks in advance

    The problem is your permalinks.

That you need to have index.php in there is why it’s busted :/ WP Multisite isn’t friendly with that.

    Sorry, I’m confused

But what has Permalinks got to do with opening up the Dashboard ?

I’ve tried the permalinks with and without index.php and the result is no different.

    If I do
https://www.syngestreet.com/wp-admin/ it works – I get the login screen

    If I do
primary.syngestreet.com/wp-admin/ I get Page not Found, which I also get too if I try a wildcard subdomain

Well.. permalinks are kind of the crux of how WP works.

Everything is virtual. Just like there are no actual /postname/ files on your server, there are no subdomain specific files on the server. This means when you go to subdomain.domain.com you’re actually going to domin.com, and the .htaccess file (which you’ll see has code that specifies wp-admin) redirects you transparently.

What this means in your case is that because your permalinks are forcing /index.php/ in, it makes the redirects WP needs to be able to do to generate the virtual wp-admin impossible.

In order for Multisite to work as expected, you’ll need actual pretty permalinks to work: domain.com/postname/ NOT domain.com/index.php/postname

    Thanks for that

    BUT …..

How do I achieve this ?

I’ve now set Permalinks to Default – https://syngestreet.com/?p=123 but I still cannot access any subdomain Admin pages. And so, I cannot get to the primary.syngestreet.com/wp-admin/post-new.php

    HEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPP

This sucks to say, but you have to talk to your webhost.

Do they support pretty permalinks? REAL pretty permalinks? Without that, it won’t ever work. Ever. Period.
