Cannot access /update-core.php or /plugins.php

  • Folks, I’m not a coder, so go easy please …
    I’m running 3.8.2 and can no longer access either update-core.php or plugins.php to update them. All other functionality is fine – posting, comments, etc.
    I get the message “The mywebsitename.com page isn’t working. mywebsitename.com is currently unable to handle this request. HTTP ERROR 500”.
    I’ve done Tools > Export > All Content, so I guess my content is safe on my PC.
    Is there anything I can do to recover this situation please, given that I know zilch about coding, ftp, etc.
