I am using a child theme of Misty Lake and in general find it excellent in all respects. My principal menu has 10 tabs for pages and under a few of these there are 5 subpages. In total there are 15 pages and subpages in the menu.

I would like to add two more subpages. When I add one such subpage and attempt to save the menu, the menu edit page closes and I am moved to the Home Page.

I thought I might get around the possible limit on the number of menu items by creating a new menu. If I try to create such a new menu and name this, when I confirm this name, again I am moved to the Home Page.

What is the easiest way of adding more subpages to the navigation menu?

  • Menu issues like this sound like a WordPress core issue, not a theme-related problem.

You’ll find some possible workarounds here, which involve tweaking your server configuration:

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/menu-size-limit

Things you could try to rule out before going that route:

    – Temporarily deactivate all your plugins. Does the problem persist? If the problem is gone, reactivate your plugins one-by-one, look at the site in between each reactivation, to find the conflict.
    – Temporarily switch to a default theme like Twenty Sixteen. If the problem is still there than it’s definitely not a theme issue.

Thank you, Kathryn. I’m still finding this somewhat perplexing. I can’t think there is a block on a total of 15 items in a menu. The other cases which you mention and which I had previously reviewed are dealing with a block at 90 items although smaller numbers were mentioned in the discussion. However 15!!

I agree, it does seem low.

You could try the two troubleshooting techniques I mentioned above and see how it goes, to try to narrow down the culprit.

Also, there are two ways to add a menu:

    – WP Admin, under Appearance > Menus
    – Customizer’s Menus panel

Does the problem happen in both places or just one?

Sorry for my delay in responding. I finally found the solution to my problem, which is linked to the question you raise, Kathryn. Since it may have wider application, I thought it would be useful to publish the details here.

The problem arises if you go via the sidebar link on the Dashboard for Appearance. This has the following choices:

    • Themes
    • Customize
    • Widgets
    • Menus
    • Header
    • Background

If you go via the Menus link here, then you have the problems I mentioned earlier. Changes you make to the Menu are not retained when you save it.

On the other hand if you click on the Customize link, then you have the following choices for the Active Theme:

    • Site Identity
    • Theme Options
    • Colours
    • Header Image
    • Background Image
    • Menus
    • Widgets
    • Static Front Page

Using this Menus link specifically for this theme, then the choices you make are saved and do get applied to the visible website.

I hope this is useful to others.

I’m glad you found a workaround by using the Customizer Menus panel. I’m not sure why your WP Admin Menus area is not working correctly but I’m glad you were able to save them another way!
