Cannot add new post / deactivate plugins

    I an having a similar problem I have seen on other posts but have not yet found a solution to…

    I upgraded to 3.8.1 a while ago, and whilst I had no problems to begin with, I now find I cannot submit any new posts, not can I deactivate plugins, nor really make any changes via the dashboard.

    I have tried these fixes:
    ? checked the permissions of wp-content to 755
    ? Tried replacing wp-admin, wp-includes with the latest version of wordpress.
    ? Deactivates plugins – though I could not do this via wp_admin, nor could I rename to the plugins folder via FTP I did manage to delete the plugins folder via File Manager on my webhost. But did not solve the problem (have replaced plugins now)
    ? cannot switch back to a basic theme (am using a child theme of TwentyTwelve because cannot use wp_admin – is there a manual way to do this?

    Found this fix for someone else on another post:
    ‘The solution to my problem was to reset the settings in my php.ini file in wp-admin. I had modified to allow for larger media uploads but apparently I had set it too high.’

    Can anyone tell me how to find the php.ini file? I can’t see it in my wp_admin… is this a good idea?

    Any other fixes greatly appreciated…

    Yes you can. You can switch to the default 2014 theme. Also try:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    sorry maybe I did not make myself quite clear –?I cannot switch back to a basic theme because the dashboard will not let me, when I click to select a different default theme I get a message saying the theme is activated, yet the site is still using the TwentyTwelve child theme – the same problem as when I use anything on the dashboard, I receive a message saying my change has been made, but nothing has changed…

    I have managed to deactivate all plugins manually, but deleting the plug in folder using File Manager on my webhost. But the problem was still there. (I have now reinstated the plugins.)

    any other suggestions gratefully received…

    for anyone having the same problem… the solution was that there was a 150Mb cap on my database size, and once I had gone over that limit I was locked out of the database by my host and unable to change anything. The massive size was due to the number of spam comments – although I was using Akismet the comments were still stored in the database.

    The solution was to delete the comments via phpMyAdmin, ask my host to unlock my access to the database, then optimise my database on a regular basis –?if I had done this before the problem would not have arisen, optimising would have got rid of the spam comments. I’m going to install the WP-optimise plugin to do this automatically…
