• Hi
I am using the siteorigin vantage theme and installed the breadcrumb plugin. I have not paid any fees.

Within the setting page I am trying to check the tick boxes under the headings Blog Breadcrumb and Mainsite Breadcrumb but cannot do so.

To clarify the check boxes does not change when they are clicked and the associate fields below are greyed out so cannot edit the text within them?

    Can anyone help

Further to the above, all I am trying to achieve is that the breadcrumb shows “blog” not “news” and so redirects to my “blog” page not the “news” page

The blog options are disabled since you do not have a front page specified under “Settings > General”. Additionally, you may need to set a posts page specified on the same settings page. The mainsite options are only available when WordPress is in network/multisite mode.

    Hi John,

First many thanks for your reply I am a newbie to wordpress etc so if I have misunderstood anything it is down to my trying to learn.

Under settings I cannot see where you set the front page?
Within the vantage theme I ensured that the “Home” page is pointing to the correct page as not a static front page.

Additional within Vantage I do not set the “blog” page as this disrupts where posts are shown as I am using a Siteorigin plugin to restrict posts displayed by page relevant categories. https://www.chatnsurf.co.uk is my experimental site so browsing the pages you see what I mean; hopefully ??

I basically understand your meaning for the network/multisite mode.

Sorry, I wrote down the wrong settings page. You will find the “Front page displays” settings under “Settings > Reading” within the WordPress admin area. On that settings page, you will need to select “A static page (select below)”, and then set the “Front page” and “Posts page” settings. In general, I would avoid using theme specific constructs for setting separate pages for posts and the front page as it is likely they are not compatible with other plugins.

    Hi John,

Many thanks for the reply and I am sorry for my slow response.

I already have actioned as you describe for the front page, however when I set the post page to “my built” blog page it overwrites the theme elements I have built in; as you mention, so changes the structure of that element of the sites design. ??

As I cannot seem to edit the wordpress News or Blog default pages I will have to have a rethink on the need for the breadcrumb / present design. ??

What a life when you are learning :):)

    Further to my last,

I have discovered that when the breadcumb shows the “News” link the Alttext shows it linked to the relevant Category archive.

    [thinking out loud]
I suppose it depends if the code for that element can be amended to direct to the correct page.

However as I am using siteorigin post widgets to control what posts are shown; I have a news blog and a vacancies post pages, then it gets more complicated.

To visually see what I mean:
select https://chatnsurf.co.uk/blog then a post and then select news in the breadcrumb.

select https://chatnsurf.co.uk/Vacancies then a vacancy post then select vacancies in the breadcrumb.

You will see that both examples return you back to the relevant category archive page.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Cheers

Looking at what you’re doing there, I think you should look into using Custom Post Types, especially for “Vacancies”. With this you can still use a page for displaying the posts of that type using your current method (instead of filtering by category, you filter by type). Then, you can set that page as the “root” for that post type using the “Root Page” setting in Breadcrumb NavXT for the custom post type.

    Hi John

    Thanks for the reply.

as an experimental newbie I am digesting your info so please bear with me. ??

On the vacancies page the siteorgin Post loop filters by categories? there is a selection box in the build post query to select pages but not filter by type?

I cannot find the “root page” setting in Breadcrumb Navxt?

    I don’t suppose there is a tutorial.. ??

    Again very grateful.

I don’t use siteorigin post loop, so I do not know what its exact feature set is. That said, it is not that difficult to filter queries by post type verses category, so I’d assume that plugin would support it.

Breadcrumb NavXT’s “Root Page” setting is unique for each post type. It is found under the “Posts” tab of the Breadcrumb NavXT settings page for every custom post type.

    Hi John

as ever many thanks for your help.

    https://siteorigin.com/focus-documentation/focus-post-loops/
the above is a link to see how the post loop works.

I wish I could send you a screen shot of the fields under the “Posts” tab (tab actually says “Post Types”) as there are no heading for a “Root Page” settings?

There is a “Post Hierarchy” which I had set to “category” to show the “Blog/vacancies” elements in the breadcrumb.

I changed this to both “tags” and “posts parent” but this only show the Root name i.e. chatnsurf (home page) and the post name in the bread crumb. This is OK but obviously only allows me to go back to the chatnsurf home page. To get around this I have inserted an icon; hyperlinked to the blog / vacancy page as required.

I understand the solution you mention but think that the siteorigin post loop will not allow it, also my issue with your root page?

Again many thanks as it is a great plugin which to use I may have to use the workround I mentioned. ??
