Cannot change text on Buy Now button

On an old button created for EDD the button taking the user to the purchase page is labelled $29.00- Purchase. When I create a new download, I cannot change the button label from Checkout, even though the Buy Now option is available and selected using PayPal Standard. The Shortcode text cannot be edited within EDD. How can I set the label on the action button to a desired string?

It seems as though this forum does not support images, so I can’t attach a screenshot.
I found that removing the button and adding it again made the button text appear as shown in the link above, with the price followed by – Purchase. This is OK, but I would like to able to control the text appearing on the button.
