• I have a number of blogroll items displaying jpg images along w. links. Yet when I tried to create a new link w. a jpg image (which was placed in the image url field), the image will not display.

If you wish to check out the problem go to my home pg:
    https://www.richardsilverstein.com/
then to the ‘Progressive Blogs’ section of the blogroll (near the bottom) and look for ‘Global Voices.’ You’ll see a standard link w. no image.

I’ve even checked my page source & can clearly see image display code associated w. the blogroll images which ARE displaying, while no img display code appears next to Global Voices entry.

I’ve checked out the uri for the image & when I visit the url I can see the image perfectly. Why am I having image display problems?

  • Silly question, but have you made sure in the links manager that the option for image is selected under those link categories where they picture is not showing up?

I just checked the full Links list & under Image for this particular link it says “Yes.” I assume that’s what you’re referring to.

UPDATE: Yr suggestion got me to fooling around w. the Links Mgr. settings & I came to see that there are settings for ea. category. So I checked & sure enough you must check “Images” within ea. category in order to allow an individual blogroll link to display an image. Now the image is displaying fine. Thanks for jogging my mind into figuring this out.

I think it’s a little odd that WP wouldn’t allow you to change the default category setting so that Image would be always enabled, rather than always disabled. And also, I don’t understand why WP wouldn’t give you an error if you tried to add an image to a blogroll link w/o having Image enabled within the category itself. It seems destined to create confusion of the kind I faced.

    Sometimes it’s the small things.

I know how you feel about having “default” selections, but there are also many, many people who dislike the fact that, with posts, unless you select a seperate category, all posts fall into the default cat. So, you can’t please everyone!

    Glad I could help.

You’re sure right about the small things.

Way back in the olden days (1973 or 1974) when computers were brand new (or at least much newer than now) I took a computer course at Columbia University. I don’t know why I did that. I was looking for an interesting but easy elective to fulfill some sort of academic requirement & I chose that course. Anyway, the one thing I took away fr. that is how incredibly easy it was to screw up programming instructions. One missed bit of punctuation or wrong letter messed up everything & you had to go completely back to the drawing board. This aspect of computing didn’t appeal to me at all. But it didn’t turn me off completely since I got into Microsoft Word in the mid 1980s & obssessed about it for thousands of hrs. till I got it right (more or less). And I’ve been obssessing ever since–my most recent obssession (going back to 2003) is my blog.

I deal w. the category default issue by changing my settings so that all posts are automatically assigned to my largest category. That way I’ll only have to manually change that when I publish posts outside that category.
